Membership
The St. Louis Ovarian Cancer Awareness (SLOCA) organization, which has been a board of concerned people, has elected to open membership to our families and friends. Our goals are to make all women knowledgeable about the symptoms of this very silent disease, to provide funds for those undergoing treatment who need help covering costs to and from treatment facilities, and to donate funds for ovarian cancer research.
Because ovarian cancer presents few early warning signs, most patients are diagnosed when the cancer has reached an advanced stage. Some of the first early symptoms of ovarian cancer are those associated with less threatening ailments such as gastrointestinal or urinary tract disorders. Any of these symptoms that are manifested daily and remain for a few weeks should be a signal for a women to see her gynecologist immediately.
Each year in the United States, over 25,000 women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer and 14,000 women will die from this deadly disease. Each year in Missouri, over 400 women are diagnosed with this deadly disease and more than 300 will die. In the St. Louis Metropolitan area alone, over 140 deaths per year are attributed to ovarian cancer. These are alarming numbers and unless all women are aware of ovarian cancer symptoms, the cancer will continue to burden women and their families for years to come.
We invite you to join our organization, so that we can help defeat this cancer that takes from our lives so many mothers, wives, daughters, sisters, and friends. With your help we can raise the awareness of ovarian cancer symptoms and the importance of early detection and treatment.
As a member of SLOCA, you will receive our monthly newsletter via email and be the first to learn of SLOCA supported events and ovarian cancer education opportunities. The SLOCA membership period is from October 1 through September 30 each year. However, if you join now you will begin to take advantage of membership privileges immediately through September 30, 2009.
