Beth Hudson Takes Helm as SLOCA PresidentJune 13th, 2011 Beth Hudson, an ovarian cancer survivor, is the new president of SLOCA, effective July 1. She succeeds Karen Higano. The board also re-elected Dede Dierkes to a full two-year term as recording secretary; she has served more than a year in that position. Beth Hudson has worked in many SLOCA programs. She is a speaker with the Survivors Teaching Students program. Last year she reactivated the Speakers Bureau and created a new PowerPoint presentation to complement the speakers’ personal stories. She spearheaded a project to make and deliver teal ribbon cookies to patients undergoing chemotherapy last September. She also has worked on Sister Gifts for newly diagnosed patients and on the Living Out Loud auction. Besides experiencing ovarian cancer firsthand, Beth was a caregiver for her sister, who passed away from the disease in 2009. “I am passionate about the mission of SLOCA,” says Beth, “and I would like to see it not only continue at its present pace, but grow and thrive. I look forward to working with our Board to come up with a long-range plan and to increase member involvement while fulfilling our mission of funding research grants, raising awareness of the symptoms of ovarian cancer, and supporting survivors.” Karen Higano, who also is a survivor of ovarian cancer, is completing a two-year term as president. Before that, she served two years as SLOCA’s treasurer. Karen has chaired the Living Out Loud dinner auction for two consecutive years and has been involved in nearly every aspect of SLOCA’s mission. In 2009, she and her husband Stuart – both avid bicyclists – launched a new fund-raising event, Trail Ride for Ovarian Cancer, or TROCA. With another cyclist, they rode the Katy Trail end-to-end and raised almost $13,000 singlehandedly. Karen says she plans to remain active in SLOCA but is also turning her attention to the parent-teacher organization at her son’s elementary school. Living Out Loud is SLOCA’s premiere fund-raising event. This year, as last, it will be held in the beautiful glass atrium of the Ameren Corporate Headquarters, off Chouteau Avenue west of Tucker near downtown St. Louis. The gala’s theme will be “Life Is a Canvas – Live It Out Loud.” SLOCA will honor Dennis Weisenborn (at right), Ameren’s vice president of supply services, for his unwavering support and assistance to SLOCA for the past several years. Mike Jorgensen will be the honorary co-chairperson. Mike is a former manager and now assistant to the general manger for the St. Louis Cardinals. His wife, Brenda, passed away in 2011 after a long battle with ovarian cancer. The Jorgensen family created and sponsor the annual FamiliesROC race that funds ovarian cancer research. The event will begin at 6 p.m. Partiers will enjoy an open bar and hors d’oeuvres as they peruse the tables of silent auction items. At 7:30, the focus will shift to the banquet room where guests will feast on a sumptuous dinner. The evening will wrap up with a fast-paced oral auction led by auctioneer Ron Harke. Like he did in 2011, Ron will conclude the oral auction by asking guests to help fund SLOCA’s programs with donations at various levels of giving. Tickets will go on sale in March for $125 per person, or $1,250 for a table of 10. You can make reservations by calling event coordinator Allison Hershberger, 618.920.8116, or going online at www.sloca.org/auction. Save the Date cards are being mailed next week. Jeremy Rutherford, a hockey writer whose mother died of ovarian cancer, is leading the effort to secure unique and otherwise unobtainable auction items. Among them are a group visit at a fire station, with lunch there and a ride on a fire truck. Another is a virtual Top Gun flight simulator experience. Among other oral auction items will be the right to throw out the first pitch at Busch Stadium when the Cards take on the Brewers on Sept. 7, which is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Night at the Ballpark; a Cardinals clubhouse package, a St. Louis Blues package and a piece of artwork. . Beth Hudson, SLOCA’s president, and Allison have set a goal of raising $100,000 at the event. That’s significantly more than in years past, but it is needed to meet SLOCA’s ambitious goals of meeting its threefold mission square-on. The mission statement reflects a commitment to impact ovarian cancer survivorship by promoting awareness of early warning signs and standard of care, funding ovarian cancer research, and supporting survivors. “We are stretching to make this our most successful fundraiser ever,” says Beth. “We feel we’re making headway in raising awareness of ovarian cancer in the St. Louis area, but we could do so much more with more funding.” The auction planners are still looking for oral auction and silent auction items. If you can help, call Allison or leave a message on the SLOCA call line, at 314-995-6220. Beth also is making a special appeal for sponsorships that will help underwrite the costs of the event. If you can help by suggesting a person or company who would be a potential sponsor, call Beth at 314-821-2549. SLOCA is a non-profit, 501(c)3 organization. It is an all-volunteer organization of women impacted by a diagnosis of ovarian cancer, and their families and friends, along with medical professionals. Posted in Events, FundraisingNo Comments » Research Zeroes in on Hens, Ovarian CancerJanuary 21st, 2012 Researchers at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Carbondale are trying to determine how flaxseed helps prevent deaths from ovarian cancer in chickens, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported on Jan. 19, 2012. Turns out chickens and women have a lot in common, physiology department chair Dale “Buck” Hales has discovered. Hales began searching more than 10 years ago for an animal model to study the link between inflammation and ovarian cancer in women. He focused on the 2-year-old hen, which he found has ovulated about the same number of times as a woman who has reached menopause, when ovarian cancer manifests.
