Quilt ProjectThe SLOCA Quilt ProjectQuilt block and story by Diane E. Harrison The needlepoint block below is the center block for St. Louis Ovarian Cancer Awareness' (SLOCA's) ovarian cancer quilt. We decided to make a quilt while attending the September 2002 Ovarian Cancer National Alliance conference in Washington, D.C. All seven SLOCA board members attended the conference. It was a great opportunity to bond and learn together, since our group was founded in June 2002. During the conference, we admired a quilt made by nurses in honor or memory of GYN cancer patients. Our Vice President at the time, Judy Parham, developed the idea for SLOCA's quilt project. The board decided to accept quilt blocks from ovarian cancer survivors, caregivers and healthcare providers. I wanted the quilt's center block to contain the SLOCA name and logo. I suggested a needlepoint quilt block, and the other board members agreed. After five months of work, the needlepoint block was complete. I stitched the block with pride in our organization. I hope the block provides an identity for our group as the quilt travels to national quilt shows and ovarian cancer awareness events.
