Sister Boxes

Here's some feedback from recipients of the Sister Boxes:

"I received this box and felt truly cared for. I felt like this box was put together with thought and love, and it was just what I needed when I was so frazzled and overwhelmed."

"I just had the best time -- thank you. Now I'm in my cozy socks with my SLOCA ballcap on my head. And I smell great from the lotions!! The Sister Box lifted my spirits. Thank you, thank you, thank you."

"I really enjoy reading Chicken Soup for the Cancer Survivor's Soul. The stories are so encouraging. When I read them, they give me so much hope."

"This gift was wonderful. It touched my heart at a time I was scared -- facing my first chemo. It let me know I am not alone in this fight."

"It has been a whirlwind first day of chemo. It seemed I was alone but when I received this box I knew I wasn't! Thank you -- blessings!"

"The nurse gave my daughter your box of goodies which I opened in the car on my ride home. What a nice surprise I found inside. I was deeply touched. Thank you so much! I can do this ... So much support and I know God is with me."

"Thank you so much for taking the time to reach out and begin a feeling of community and hope. I still have so much to do and learn."

One of SLOCA's programs that is most personal to women who are diagnosed with ovarian cancer is its Sister Box gifts.

SLOCA distributes about 200 gift boxes each year to women who are newly diagnosed with the disease in the St. Louis area. The boxes are presented to the women at the offices of St. Louis area gynecologic oncologists, usually at the beginning of chemotherapy treatment.

The boxes are assembled by SLOCA volunteer Sheri Petruso and her family. A portion of the contents are purchased with the help of a grant.

Some of the contents are inspirational, some are designed to provide comfort, some are just plain fun. Among the contents are:

  • SLOCA welcome letter and feedback card
  • "Chicken Soup of the Cancer Survivor's Soul" book
  • Campbell's Chicken Noodle Soup
  • "Understanding Ovarian Cancer: A Woman's Guide," from the Foundation for Women's Cancer
  • Chemo cap
  • Pair of cozy socks
  • Ricola Honey Lemon Echinacea & Herb throat drops
